Eisler:  Fourteen Ways of Describing Rain[USA]

November 27 2010

This piece performed as a part of “Diamonds, Raindrops & Blood” concert

DIAMONDS, RAINDROPS & BLOOD - music of Haydn, Strauss, Schoenberg & Eisler
A line from the Austrian Enlightenment period of Franz Joseph Haydn is drawn to Los Angeles of the 1940s. This program is sumptuous, stimulating and full of ideas. The famous “Emperor” quartet's most memorable tune was appropriated by the Nazis. Another Emperor was celebrated by Johann Strauss's “Kaiser Waltz,” given a piquant arrangement by Arnold Schoenberg, who is also represented by his ripely romantic first work, and the stirring “Ode to Napoleon.” For Schoenberg's 70 birthday, his controversial student Hans Eisler offered his masteful “Fourteen Ways of Describing Rain.”

A journey from the Austrian Enlightenment to Los Angeles in 1944.
